


Earth Day Cleanup
Our annual Earth Day community clean up project. Wear your protective clothing, gloves and boots, bring rakes and other garden implements. Small crews clean up roadsides in our area and meet at the end for lunch at the Community Hall.

Annual Holiday Tree Lighting
Save the date for our annual Holiday gathering, carol singing and tree lighting.

Applefest---Free and Open to All
We will hold our annual Autumn celebration rain or shine at the Meetinghouse (hopefully outside!) with our famous Apple recipe contest. Bring a savory appetizer and/or drink to share for this free open community event, no RSVP needed.


Earth Day Cleanup
We will gather at 10am on the New Concord green (at the Xmas tree) and split into groups to do the cleanup heading in different directions. Come dressed sensibly with boots, gloves and long sleeves. We’ll provide the garbage bags. At 11:30 we’ll gather at the Meetinghouse for coffee and donuts. No RSVP needed, just come if you are available.
Rain/snow day is next day, Sunday, April 21st. Email blast will notify you by 9am if we are postponing.

SNC Summer Picnic
We’ll celebrate summer and the start of our exterior restoration on the Meetinghouse. We’ll enjoy a special treat: Ana Dane’s tea tasting and presentation. She will have 3 different iced teas to sample, along with liquor to make special cocktails. The presentation and tasting will be in the Meeting House from 4:30 - 5 pm.
We will provide hamburgers, hot dogs condiments and a veggie option, please bring a side dish, dessert or wine or soft drink to share.

Earth Day Cleanup of New Concord
Join your neighbors in our annual cleanup morning in celebration of Earth Day and welcoming Spring. Meet at 10am at the Green in the center of New Concord to break into work teams to pick up roadside debris that has accumulated over the winter. Meet back at the Meetinghouse at noon for lunch. NO RSVP needed. Rain date is the following Saturday, April 29th.
PLEASE COME PREPARED IN WORK CLOTHES WITH GLOVES, BOOTS, RAKES, ETC. Trash bags will be provided and full bags collected at the end.

History Beneath Our Feet Historical Talk
Max Cane and Dodie Gearing will be presenting their discoveries while metal-detecting in New Concord and in the Town of Canaan as well as some of the research and mapping techniques that reveal home sites and cemeteries lost to time. Artifacts like militia buttons, fancy Georgian shoe buckles and counterfeit British halfpennies give a glimpse into the daily lives of these families and the social climate in early American History.
On September 23, 2022 Dodie Gearing and Max Cane found the Lea-Van Cott Cemetery in Canaan, New York using his metal detecting device. The Pratts and Van Cotts were the families that left Canaan and eventually founded the Mormon faith.
The illustrated talk will be followed by savories and an opportunity to meet and question the speakers.
Max Cane holds a Master’s Degree in Geology/Earth Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is the president of Pro-Tec Recycling and consultant in Troy, New York
Dodie (Doris) Gearing holds a Master’s Degree in Advanced Classroom Teaching and History from the State University of New York at Albany. Dodie has been the Town of Canaan Historian since 2017 and the Canaan Historical Society Museum Curator since 2020. She is a charter member of the Society of New Concord.

Dinner and a Movie--Empire of Light

A drama about the power of human connection during turbulent times, set in an English coastal town in the early 1980s.
Hilary (Olivia Colman) is a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Micheal Ward) is a new employee longing to escape the provincial town where he faces daily adversity. Together they find a sense of belonging and experience the healing power of music, cinema, and community.

At the SNC Community Hall and Meeting House, of course. We will provide an array of chilis: beef, turkey, sausage and vegetable, along with toppings and cornbread.

Holiday Pot Luck, Caroling & Tree Lighting
The annual Society of New Concord Holiday Gathering is back! Meet up at 4pm for a potluck (we’ll supply the ham and turkey, you bring side dishes and desserts to share) After eating, we’ll do some caroling in the church building, then bundle up and walk over to the village Green for the tree-lighting.

Child POW: My Experience in a Japanese Concentration Camp in Manila (WW-II)
Santo Tomas Internment Camp: Manila Prison Camp #1
Isabel Krebs will describe her childhood experience in a Japanese concentration camp during World War-II in Manilla. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
Captured when she was 7 and released after her 11th birthday, she presents a child's view of the prisoner experience as well as her adult analysis. Ridiculous as well as life threatening circumstances were not lost on the 500 children in Santo Tomas Internment Camp, aka Manila Prison Camp # 1, where they spent 3 years with 3300 adult prisoners.
Coffee, tea and pastries will be served.
There is no fee for the event. All are welcome.
